Day 21: The Others
I'm off topic again, but only partially.
One of the great things about 40 Days for Life is that it brings together those from many different facets of the pro-life movement for a concentrated time of prayer, fasting, and outreach. Priests, pastors, citizens, advocates, legislators, physicians, and others put aside methodological, and strategic differences to unite around the common conviction of life being created by God, and worthy of protection. We're all fighting the good fight of faith the best we know how, kind of like those Biblical examples of old mentioned in the book of Hebrews. I love that passage we've come to refer to as the faith hall of fame. Reading about those who subdued kingdoms, shut the mouths of lions, escaped death, and received loved ones back from the dead-that never gets old. That's thrilling stuff. I can see why it's in the Book; who wouldn't be inspired by accounts of such victories wrought by faith? But then there are the "others"...
But others were tortured,..jeered at, and their backs were cut open with whips. Others were chained in prisons. Some died by stoning, some were sawed in half, and others were killed with the sword. -- Heb. 11:35b-37a
At this the halfway point of the current 40 Days cycle, 133 babies' lives have been preserved; stories are pouring in from all over the country of people being touched by the sight of women, men, and children praying at abortion clinics; and testimonies are being shared of clinic workers having second thoughts about their chosen vocation. But in other places, no stories have been told, not one account of a baby being saved has come forth. Others are continuing their vigil without one word of encouragement from passersby, without one minute of coverage by the local media. Others are showing up although it appears that for them, and their city, and the abortion clinic where they've been assigned, God hasn't 'shown out.' That's hard to do. But the good news is that we're all "earning a good reputation with God" because of our faith.
So to those of you in Dubuque, Iowa, Dayton, Ohio, and other such places, keep the faith because that's what has God's attention. Your story is being told in heaven just like all the others.
