I know that most folks are tired of hearing about the whole LeBron James saga. For the past few weeks, it's been nonstop speculation and rumors. Then, finally, last week James shocked the world, especially Northeast Ohio, with his decision to bolt to Miami for better weather--and presumably a better chance to win an NBA championship. I reflect on the drama in an earlier commentary at UrbanFaith.com, where I explore the various messianic monikers that have been attached to James by his marketers and himself (e.g., the King, the Chosen One) and I wonder whether now a more appropriate biblical metaphor might be "the Prodigal Son."

I know there are more important things happening in the world, and that when it comes down to it LeBron is only a basketball player. But, as Washington Post columnist and ESPN analyst Michael Wilbon says in this great piece, the LeBron story touches on so many other cultural flashpoints beyond simply sports. We're talking issues of money and power, family and friendship, civic pride and loyalty, manhood and responsibility, and, of course, race.

You've got Dan Gilbert, the bitter owner of the Cleveland Cavaliers, posting a scathing anti-James screed at the team's website, accusing his former employee of betraying the team as well as his hometown. You've got folks in Ohio burning jerseys and scrambling to dismantle the gigantic downtown murals of LeBron that, to the outsider, always appeared just a little bit too excessive (like a shrine to a Greek deity, or like the Jackson brothers strolling triumphantly over the earth). And now you've got Jesse Jackson accusing Gilbert of viewing James as a runaway slave.

You knew the race angle was coming. It's never too far away when you're talking about professional sports in America, especially in the NBA, where 99 percent of the ballplayers are black and 99 percent of the franchise owners are white. William Rhoden's controversial 2006 book, Forty Million Dollar Slaves, is just one of many commentaries linking pro sports in modern America to the slave trade of yesteryear.

I wish Rev. Jackson wouldn't have been the one to verbalize the obvious pachyderm in the room ("There he goes again, injecting race into everything!" folks will say), but there it is.

Personally, while I think it's probably impossible to completely extract race from the issue of power relationships in pro sports, I believe Gilbert should be allowed to rant, rage, and generally come across as an emotional jerk without being accused of racism. He simply reacted like any scorned human being whose business just lost an estimated $100 million in value probably would. I'll give him the benefit of the doubt. That said, I think it would've been wise for him to wait a few days before issuing a statement. The unintentional damage that he caused his franchise through his outburst could be worse in the long term than losing LeBron James.

Still, it's unfair to imply that Gilbert is acting out of a "slave master mentality" just because he happens to be white and LeBron is black. That doesn't excuse the fact that Gilbert might be a mean, arrogant, and impulsive billionaire who was trying to save face. But why add "racist" to the equation without sufficient proof?

But back to LeBron James. As long as he's still able to do the things that LeBron James does on the basketball court, his reputation as a superstar player, though tarnished, will recover. The real tragedy, in my view, is the way James made his announcement. He had every right to leave Cleveland, but why do it in such a ... ahem ... cavalier manner? He was apparently so disconnected from the reality of his decision---and focused on his own self-interest---that he could not grasp the full implications of rejecting his former team and his devoted fans in Northeast Ohio on national TV in an overblown ESPN special. Or, as some have speculated, maybe he did it that way to inflict maximum pain on Gilbert and his franchise for some behind-the-scenes reason.

Either way, I hope James will someday grow into a more mature understanding of humility and compassion. Come to think of it, in an odd way, maybe that's why he's going to a place with two other elite stars in Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh (not to mention team president Pat Riley). Maybe he's leaving the comfort, security, and adoration found in Cleveland because in his home state he'll always be venerated as "the Chosen One." Maybe he needs to escape to Miami to become human again.

There seemed to be very little marketing behind it, which is truly a shame. I was pleasantly surprised by this little gem.

Based on the book of the same name by W. William Winokur (who also wrote the script), The Perfect Game recounts the true story of a scrappy group of boys in Monterrey, Mexico, who end up competing in the 1957 Little League World Series in Williamsport, Pennsylvania. Padre Esteban (Cheech Marin), the local Catholic priest, mentors the boys, fuels their baseball dreams, and guides their faith in God. Cesar Faz (Clifton Collins Jr.) coaches the new team, but struggles to overcome his failed attempt as a baseball prospect in America due to racism. Other supporting characters include Maria (Patricia Manterola), the coach's love interest, and Frankie (Emilie de Ravin from ABC's Lost), a sassy newspaper reporter who documents the boys' journey.

Throughout the film, the boys struggle against discrimination due to their economic situation, their race, and their faith. These issues are simply displayed and not explored in depth. Thinking as an adult moviegoer (my default setting), I initially thought it would be interesting to explore these elements in more detail. But quickly I realized the film would've alienated its younger audiences if it had taken that route.

The cast is really what makes this film work. Cheech Marin is terrific as Padre Esteban, while Clifton Collins Jr. is a perfect fit in his role. Oscar-winner Louis Gossett Jr. (An Officer and a Gentleman) and Frances Fisher (Titanic) make excellent cameos, as well. But the real stars are the young actors. They fill the screen with humor, joy, and sincerity.

</:OBJECT>

In addition to the focus on discrimination, faith plays a very important role in the film. The boys are devoted to their faith and understand that anything is possible with God. When Padre Esteban is unable to attend a series game, the boys refuse to play until someone blesses them. Fortunately, an African American minister (John Cothran Jr.) steps in to assist. It's nice to see how the Christian themes -- especially the importance of faith and devotion to God -- are nicely woven into the story without it sounding preachy or as if there's an agenda attached.

Directed by William Dear (1994's Angels in the Outfield remake), this film is your classic underdog sports story, filled with several unavoidable clichés that are common in this genre. Many critics will raise a stink over this issue, but I'm not one of them -- and I don't think general audiences will mind either. The audience at my screening laughed, cheered, and applauded throughout the film. The Perfect Game may not be a perfect movie, but it is full of heart and fun.

A mailman who has lost his way. A powerful message of Christ's love and forgiveness. Sounds like the perfect Christian movie, right? Sadly, no. As much as I wanted to like this film, I just couldn't. Now before you call me the Tin Man (no heart) and say that I kick puppies for fun, just hear me out.

Letters to God is about an 8-year-old boy named Tyler (played by Tanner Maguire) who writes letters to God during his battle with cancer. These letters impact the boy's family, which includes his mother (Robin Lively), grandmother (Maree Cheatham), and older brother (Michael Bolten), and the life of a spiritually broken mailman (played very well by Jeffrey S. Johnson). Other cast members include Ralph Waite, L. Derek Leonidoff, and Bailee Madison.

I have two big problems with the movie. My first problem is that there really is no story. A boy with cancer is not a story. That's a character. A boy with cancer writing letters to God is not a story. That's a gimmick. Some will disagree with me because this film is based on a true story, but that doesn't necessarily mean you have enough elements for an engaging movie.

A story requires more than a random sequence of events. It takes well-developed characters, a protagonist who wants to achieve something, a journey filled with obstacles, and character growth. In all honesty, this film lacks all of these elements. As I watched the film I never knew what the boy wanted. Did he want to survive? Did he want to come to terms with his cancer? Did he want to be a witness to others? What was his ultimate goal? The answers to these questions were unclear. He seems to merely exist with cancer, while other characters revolve around him and are impacted by his existence.

My second problem is that the movie relies on its message as the driving force. This film's message is top-notch, but, again, a message does not equal a story. A message is a sermon or a billboard. Christian filmmakers need to treat movies as an art form and not simply a marketing tool for Christ. They need to create a compelling story and trust that story to reveal the message of Christ without beating audiences over the head with it.

Overall, I think the film would've been more effective if it focused mainly on the boy's friendship with the mailman instead of sporadically trying to include everyone else. The characters should've been fleshed out more, as well. They seemed to represent issues faced by those affected by cancer rather than being really human. I wanted to like them. I liked the idea of them, but they never delivered on their potential. There are plenty of cringe-worthy moments where the performances and the sharing of the Gospel seemed forced and awkward. Can you imagine how much stronger these kinds of films would be if Meryl Streep or Morgan Freeman were in them?

Directed and produced by David Nixon (producer of Fireproof and Facing the Giants), Letters to God does for those coping with cancer what Fireproof supposedly did for struggling marriages. There's even a large line of movie merchandise that includes everything from Bibles to bracelets and even a cancer counseling program for churches. I think general Christian audiences, especially families with young children, will find enough within Letters to God to enjoy its Christian message and Disney Channel feel, but overall it will remain ineffective for secular audiences and film critics.

Written and co-directed by Patrick Doughtie, who is the father of the boy who inspired the film, the movie has a simple tagline: "Hope is contagious." Maybe one day excellence will be just as contagious within the Christian filmmaking industry. All criticism aside, I do applaud these filmmakers in striving to create quality Christian films. They're not quite there yet, but that doesn't mean they shouldn't keep trying.

With a budget deficit of $700 million, Utah lawmakers must be scratching their heads over whether or not to embrace untraditional means to alleviate their budgetary distress -- especially when school districts in places like Kansas City, Missouri, are being forced to use draconian measures to stay afloat financially.

Senator Buttars, who has since backtracked a bit on the proposal, believes that a lot of seniors slack off in their final year of high school and just "play around." This ends up costing school districts money that perhaps may be allotted to extracurricular activities which some may deem unnecessary. So he favors a system of "accelerated graduation" that would get some students out of the system sooner. Opponents of the proposal argue that senior year is still necessary because it helps to mature the students, providing another year to excel academically, athletically, and creatively.

So is the senior year in high school really as critical as some people think? Would school districts, in general, create a huge disservice to the students who may not be ready to make that choice for themselves? If eliminating the 12th grade was optional, and only a few students opted to stay in school, would the school districts accommodate the few or default to the many?

Obviously, this idea needs to be examined from several points of view. If students were able to meet all the required courses to graduate in three years instead of four, then why shouldn't they graduate early? In some cases honors students, who already outperform other students in their grade, often complete their basic requirements early and spend the 12th grade either taking more college-prep courses or several fun electives or activities. Clearly it depends on a student's goals after high school and how self-motivated they are.

Some students have a lighter load in senior year; complete classes scheduled earlier in the day and move on to work a part-time job or just go home. If there are students just hanging around school engaging in fun activities or causing distractions and mischief, should taxpayers have to pay for that?

Then there's the argument that students need that fourth year to help them mature for the responsibilities of young adulthood. While it is true that some 11th graders surpass 12th graders, and even some college freshman, the need for that last year in a structured, predictable environment may be important to the social development of many students. Also, not every high school graduate goes to college. Some go straight into the workforce, and others who have no clue, will require another year or two before figuring out exactly what they want to do "when they grow up."

On my Facebook page, I asked my friends their thoughts on the issue. One said he couldn't imagine going to college without first completing senior year. "That's where you get Calculus and Trig ... not to mention you need that year to deal with hormonal issues." He also believes that senior year provides a continuous flow of education for those planning to go to college right away. "Having gone to college years after I graduated, it was a lot harder to get into the swing, especially for math." That potentially lost year of high school could disrupt the habit of learning and studying, causing students starting college later, to have a tougher time getting back into the swing of things.

At least two of my friends drew the conclusion that compromising the education of generations to come could lead to a major decline in employability and self-development. "Take away 12th grade from schools in lower-income neighborhoods, like where I came from and you may as well incarcerate the failing student and put a broom in his hands."

Another friend, whose husband is from Egypt said, "Where my husband is from, you are geared from high school to go straight into medical school, etc. The problem though is due to a lack of social and emotional development these doctors and lawyers, in my opinion, do not possess that necessary element to really follow through with providing their best professionally to clients. There is a disconnect. But I do believe there is an economic incentive to create these extra years in any learning institution."

Overall, the majority of the feedback I received rejected the idea of making Year Four of high school optional. But with school districts and states around the nation facing dire budget crunches, all options for cutting costs will eventually end up on the table. This is just one of many other controversial proposals to come.

So, what do you think? Is making the fourth year of high school optional a smart proposal for saving money? Short of laying off more teachers and gutting extracurricular programs, what types of creative solutions should we pursue to help our schools weather the current economic storm?

We'd probably have to close down 90 percent of the African American churches in this country!

You've likely caught wind of this controversy already. Beck, the fiery and often humorous conservative talk show host on the FOX News network, told his radio and TV audiences last week that the terms are code for "communism" and "Nazism." He advised:

I beg you, look for the words "social justice" or "economic justice" on your church website. If you find it, run as fast as you can. Social justice and economic justice, they are code words.

Just to be clear, he added:

Now, am I advising people to leave their church? Yes!

Not surprisingly, Beck's comments have stirred the ire of many Christian groups, especially those that believe working for social justice is essential to proclaiming the gospel. Our good friends over at Sojourners, led by founder Jim Wallis, have taken the lead in calling out Mr. Beck on his comments.

We know Beck's words are all part of the theater of political punditry and ratings, designed to excite those who agree and rile up those who don't, so we doubt any minds are going to be changed either way in this debate. At the very least, though, Beck provides a great opportunity for folks to go back to the Scriptures and find out for themselves what God has to say about this scary notion of "social justice." A few places to start: Amos 5:22-24, Luke 4:18-19, Luke 7:22, Matthew 12:15-21.

We came across this interesting post by Australian activist Jarrod McKenna over at the God's Politics blog, which is produced by our good friends at Sojourners. In light of all that's happening in Washington this week, especially with President Obama's health-care summit today, we thought we'd post it here in slightly edited form for your reflection.

It's interesting to see Professor Cornel West, a well-known Obama supporter, offer this strong of a critique (in some ways, it's an admonishment) of the President and his performance thus far.

Easy Hate, Hard Love, Cornel West, and Barack Obama

By Jarrod McKenna

Martin Luther King Jr. reminds us, "Hatred paralyses life; love releases it. Hatred confuses life; love harmonizes it. Hatred darkens life; love illuminates it." Yet the reality of our daily work of turning over to God our raw responses to the pain of our world is bloody hard. Rene Descartes put it succinctly (without the Australian gruffness): "It is easy to hate and difficult to love." On the right and the left there is no shortage of people who take the "easy" option -- no shortage of those who don't resist the current that would sweep us down the broad road that does not lead out into transformation. Our call as Christian believers committed to justice is to speak "the truth in love." More than that, our call is to "let our life speak" the truth in love (as John Woolman would insist). That is why Princeton scholar, author, and civil rights activist Cornel West is so exceptional. For those who haven't seen his recent interview note to Obama, please do.

Brother West calls us not just to take a stand, but to ask critical questions about how we stand. In this clip I think he does it very well. Our witness to the Crucified lacks authenticity if we don't make a stand for justice, a stand for those forgotten by the system, a stand with those considered "the least of these." But our witness only becomes prophetic [in embodying God's new world] if we can rise above the scapegoating and name calling to speak the "truth in love." Because as Christians, with all our definitions being redefined in the nonviolent life of Christ, if it is not true, it's not loving. And if it's not loving, it's not true.
Jarrod McKenna is seeking to live God's love in a world where business as usual is costing us the earth (at the expense of the poor).
